Wound Care
Sumner Regional Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in the Middle Tennessee area with hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Patients are treated using one of three hyperbaric oxygen chambers. These units pressurize oxygen to a point that it seems the patient is under the same amount of pressure as he or she would be if under 33-45 feet of water. This is also known as "diving" the patient. Patients "dive" every day for up to two hours and absorb five times as much oxygen as is normally in the atmosphere.
Hyperbaric oxygen chambers may be used on certain types of wounds, and wound treatment is often covered by insurance.
