- You must not eat, drink, chew gum or smoke after midnight the day
before your surgery. Additional instructions may vary according to
the surgical procedure and anesthetic used during your surgery.
- Leave
all jewelry and other valuables at home.
- Choose loose articles of clothing, such as a front-button blouse
or shirt, that will not cause discomfort to the surgical area.
- A
friend or relative should accompany you.
- Please report to the Same Day Surgery unit on time so your
surgery may begin at the scheduled time.
- Routine tests are done, including: temperature, blood pressure
and pulse checks. You will be checked for any recent medical problems
and asked to sign a consent form prior to surgery.
- You will change into a gown and be asked to remove jewelry,
dentures, glasses or hearing aids.
- A final check is done of your medical history and condition.
Sometimes medication is administered to help you relax before
the surgery.
- Depending on the procedure, local anesthesia (which numbs
a specific part of the body) or general anesthesia (which
puts you to sleep) is used.
- Your surgery is performed in an operating suite.
- You may go to the recovery room following your surgery.
Nursing staff will check your temperature, pulse and blood
pressure frequently.
- Visitors are limited to two per patient room. Children under
the age of 12 are allowed five-minute visits at the nurses’ discretion.
- Home care instructions for your recovery will be provided
by your physician or the Same Day Surgery staff. Please listen
carefully and ask questions about anything you do not understand.
- You will not be allowed to drive or travel by yourself because
you may still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia.
