SUMNER REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEMS REACTS TO SUMNER COUNTY’S ATTEMPTS TO DERAIL SALE TO LIFEPOINT
Sumner Regional Health Systems, Inc., (HighPoint Health System), a not-for-profit healthcare system serving the needs of communities in Tennessee through its four hospitals and other healthcare related programs and services, has reviewed the county’s Motion for Leave to Appeal, which was filed with the United States Bankruptcy Court on July 8, 2010.
HighPoint Health System has issued the following statement:
“We are disappointed that the county continues to challenge the sale of HighPoint Health System to LifePoint in the wake of multiple court rulings supporting the sale, and when the sale is so clearly in the interest of our health system and the communities it serves. The recent filings by the county are inconsistent with the county’s statements supporting an expeditious closing of the sale and appear to be designed to impede a closing. We believe that the filings relate more to decades-old resentment and regret related to previous transactions the county authorized than the issues that are at hand today. At the present time, the very future of the health system hangs in the balance, and rather than working to secure its future for the benefit of the communities the system serves, the county continues to take actions that seem designed to put the sale—and the many benefits it will bring—in jeopardy. We continue to believe that LifePoint is the right partner for us and have every reason to believe that the court will uphold its previous sale order. The legal wrangling by the county subjects the transaction and the communities HighPoint Health System serves to unnecessary risk. This is particularly regrettable because all of the county’s objections can be addressed through the allocation of proceeds following the sale. In order to serve the best interests of its constituents and secure the future of our organization, the county should fully and openly support the closing of the sale of HighPoint Health System to LifePoint on or before July 31, 2010.”
